The Sport Legacy Fund was created with the surplus generated by the 2014 Power Smart Manitoba Winter Games (MBWG). Income from this Fund will be granted to organizations for the benefit of sport annually. The purpose of the fund is to provide opportunities for promotion and enhancement of sport leadership and/or sport development within the City of Winkler and RM of Stanley.

The Winkler Community Foundation (WCF) is dedicated to the notion that good sport can make a great difference. This fund is based on a set of True Sport principles that, when properly aligned and kept in balance to one another during the sporting experience, serves to instill character in our children, strengthen our communities and increase our opportunities for excellence.

Gordon Wiebe Scholarship Fund

Students from Winkler and surrounding community will benefit from a $2.2 million estate bequest of Mr. Gordon Wiebe, a well-known pharmacist from Winkler. At an early age, Gordon identifies his ambition to pursue a career as a pharmacist and his goal was realized when he graduated from the University of Manitoba Faculty of Pharmacy in 1954. A few years later, he opened Wiebe’s Drug Store in Winkler where he maintained his business for approximately 35 years. Gordon felt the support for his business in Winkler. He always talked about his time as a business man and that Winkler had been good to him. He wanted to give back to the community that gave him his start and supported him through the years. Gordon accomplished this through creating an estate structure in his will whereby family members would be cared for, but the balance of the estate following the needs of his family would go to the Winkler Community Foundation to create scholarships for young people.

The Winkler Community Foundation is developing a scholarship program which will include assistance for students graduating from high school, for other individuals seeking further education or qualifications, and in particular assistance for those who could not otherwise afford post-secondary education. This will prove to be a wonderful benefit to the people of our community and one that will provide benefits for years to come.

First Scholarship Grants: Spring 2017.

Application deadline: February 28 annually.
