SCHOLARSHIPS MAKE STUDENT DREAMS REALITY

It is with great honor to announce our 2020 Gordon Wiebe Make It A Reality Scholarship recipient, Mikaela Warkentin. Mikaela is the fourth student to ever receive this $20,000 award by showcasing her commitment to serving her community in the RM of Stanley, her resilience in navigating barriers, and the leadership skills she has shown in her past personal projects.

Mikaela has a drive and spirit that is the very definition of what Gordon Wiebe would have hoped that our scholarship recipients would possess. Mikaela is the fourth recipient to ever receive this award, along with the past recipients, Bailey Neufeld, Tyler Froese, and Maria Gruen. She continues to give back to her community spending many hours volunteering on student council, making contributions to the Stanley Agricultural Society, and by volunteering in her church.

Mikaela is also a leader, demonstrated by her ability to rally her community of Osterwick around a common cause, the need for a new outdoor rink warming shack. Mikaela created a committee, she created a fundraiser, she found sponsors to support the cause, and was able to see her goal completed.

This year, WCF received numerous applications for the Make It A Reality Award from aspiring post-secondary students. All the applicants are actively involved in the community and have unique personal stories and walks of life that has shown us their efforts to work through difficult life circumstances and a variety of barriers to education.

Our committee carefully considered each applicant’s essay and volunteer history in making our decision. They devoted many hours, efforts, and expertise to carefully consider each applicants contribution. The Scholarship Committee thanks each Make It A Reality applicant for being open about their life experiences and we encourage them to apply for the Ongoing Education Support Scholarships moving forward.

These opportunities are made possible by the generous bequest received from former pharmacist, Gordon Wiebe. In 2015, his gift of $2.2 million established the Gordon Wiebe Education Fund. It was his wish that these awards make life dreams possible for young people who demonstrate commitment to community service. Recipients will represent this legacy.

Pay It Forward May

Pay it Forward is something we can and should be doing all year round. The Winkler Community Foundation and Morden Area Foundation has chosen one month to be more active in our efforts – not because we have to, but because we want to. Not because we’ve experienced kindness from others, but because we want to work together to make our community strong and vibrant. Pay it Forward. Inspire others. Impact our Community.
