2017 “Citizen of the Year”

August 17, 2017

The Winkler Community Foundation is excited to announce the 2017 Citizen of the Year recipient Mr. George H. Klassen, former General Manager of Winkler Co-op. This award is significant to the community as it “Shines the Light on people who make a difference”.

George was selected for his strong commitment to our community.  His vision and efforts have been instrumental in the revitalization of downtown Winkler.  Both personally and through his employment, George’s goals have included fostering a strong sense of community in the face of the challenges presented by rapid growth.

“The Winkler Community Foundation looks forward to honoring Mr. George H. Klassen as the 2017 Citizen of the Year.  We want to say Thank you to George for his leadership and vision for the community of Winkler; his involvement has made a difference in our community.” – Chris Hildebrand, Winkler Community Foundation President. “We want to thank everyone that took time to submit and support nominations. There are many well deserving individuals that give of themselves and make a lasting impact in our community.”

The Citizen of the Year, once again, will have the opportunity to present the Citizen of the Year Choice grant of $1000 to a charitable organization of his choice.

We are excited to announce that Chef Peter Fehr; innovator, creator and producer of Gourmet Inspirations will be our guest speaker at this year’s event. Peter grew up on a small hobby farm in rural Manitoba with a home grown garden and fresh home raised beef, chicken and pork. He has extensive culinary training and a history in the food service industry. All his experiences combined are what inspired the creation of Gourmet Inspirations.

Chef Peter’s vision is to see people come together and enjoy quality time with friends and family over a fresh, delicious, gourmet and healthy meal! We look forward to hearing our speaker share his story. The audience will be engaged with Chef’s inspiring journey from his roots in rural Manitoba to his success that he now cultivates within his community.

Mr. George H. Klassen will be honored at the 2017 Citizen of the Year Banquet at the Days Inn Conference Centre on Thursday, September 28, 2017. Tickets are available starting August 17th through the Winkler Community Foundation office located in Winkler City Hall, by calling the office at 204-362-9292.

WES YIP give back

Winkler Elementary School ran Youth in Philanthropy as an Exploratory program during the 2020-21 school year. They had a group of grade 8 students participate. As a part of the program, the students ran a Valentine’s Day themed fundraiser by selling boxes of smarties. They felt the smarties could share some “joy” during a COVID Valentine’s. The girls designed to and from tags for the students to send the smarties to friends aor siblings in the school. The money raised during the YIP exploratory program was matched by the Winkler Community Foundation. Thanks to the student’s efforts and the Foundation’s match, a grant of $669 was awarded to Gateway Resources. This grant has been designated for Gateway’s Life Skills Program to add tactile and sensory box resources. “We decided to raise money for the Gateway Life Skills Program because we believe everyone should have an equal opportunity to contribute to the community and do what they love!” – Karli, BYNN and Bria grade 8 YIP students from WES.   The Winkler Community Foundation loves seeing students engage in philanthropic activities. We were happy to see WES find a creative way to still teach young students about philanthropy and positively impact […]
