Scholarships Make Student Dreams Reality

May 18, 2021

WINKLER, MB (May 17, 2021) – It is with great honor to announce our 2021 Gordon Wiebe Make It A Reality Scholarship recipient, Viktoria Maschkin. Viktoria is the fifth student to ever receive this $20,000 award by showcasing her commitment to serving her community, her resilience in navigating barriers, and the leadership skills she has shown in her past projects.

Viktoria is a grade 12 student attending Garden Valley Collegiate who has demonstrated courage and passion within her school experience and in the broader community.  She has taken on leadership in various aspects of school and has invested time and energy to participate in volunteer coaching roles in the minor sports program in Winkler.

She describes herself as having a passion for children, a desire to help those in need and wanting to take action to build a better community.  As a scholarship committee, we are excited for Viktoria and look forward to seeing what the future will hold for her.

This year, WCF received numerous applications for the Make It A Reality Award from aspiring post-secondary students. All the applicants are actively involved in the community and have unique personal stories and walks of life that has shown us their efforts to work through difficult life circumstances and a variety of barriers to education.

Our committee carefully considered each applicant’s essay and volunteer history in making our decision. We devoted many hours, efforts, and expertise to carefully consider each applicants contribution. The Scholarship Committee thanks each Make It A Reality applicant for being open about their life experiences and we encourage them to apply for the Ongoing Education Support Scholarships moving forward.

These opportunities are made possible by the generous bequest received from former pharmacist, Gordon Wiebe. In 2015, his gift of $2.2 million established the Gordon Wiebe Education Fund. It was his wish that these awards make life dreams possible for young people who demonstrate commitment to community service. Recipients will represent this legacy.

WES YIP give back

Winkler Elementary School ran Youth in Philanthropy as an Exploratory program during the 2020-21 school year. They had a group of grade 8 students participate. As a part of the program, the students ran a Valentine’s Day themed fundraiser by selling boxes of smarties. They felt the smarties could share some “joy” during a COVID Valentine’s. The girls designed to and from tags for the students to send the smarties to friends aor siblings in the school. The money raised during the YIP exploratory program was matched by the Winkler Community Foundation. Thanks to the student’s efforts and the Foundation’s match, a grant of $669 was awarded to Gateway Resources. This grant has been designated for Gateway’s Life Skills Program to add tactile and sensory box resources. “We decided to raise money for the Gateway Life Skills Program because we believe everyone should have an equal opportunity to contribute to the community and do what they love!” – Karli, BYNN and Bria grade 8 YIP students from WES.   The Winkler Community Foundation loves seeing students engage in philanthropic activities. We were happy to see WES find a creative way to still teach young students about philanthropy and positively impact […]
